What is a computer virus?
Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to
spread from one computer to another and to interfere with a
computers operations, destroy files and/or destroy systems. Some
viruses are designed to retrieve your confidential information so
hackers can steal your identity.
A virus will not only corrupt your
computers operating system, but sometimes it will use your e-mails to spread
itself to other computers that are directly affiliated to you, like
friends, family, and even worse - business associates.
Viruses are most easily spread by
attachments in e-mail messages or instant messaging messages.
That is why it is essential that you never open e-mail attachments
unless you know who it's from and you
are expecting the attachment.
Viruses can be disguised as attachments of
funny images, greeting cards, or audio and/or video files.
Sometimes, computer viruses are so spread
throughout your computer, that the best way to remove it is to
reformat the hard drive and re-install your operating system and
install any files that you had backed up. Hopfully, your old
files did not contain the virus.
A better way to not have to do this is by having
your computer installed with software that helps to prevent these
viruses from getting in. Also, computers should not be
visiting sites that are not trusted or perhaps, known.
